  • 27. Sanguineto - Monte Gualandro

We set out from Sanguineto, a small cluster of houses on the first rise towards the hills around the valley between Tuoro and Monte Gualandro. We take the cypress-lined avenue towards Lake Trasimeno. At Cà di Giano we take the road heading up towards Monte Gualandro (441 m), a stretch of which turns into a track through olive groves, paying close attention to some of the forks in the road. On the last stretch, we go alongside a terraced olive grove, whereas there is a mixed forest to the left. When we come to the castle, it is worth taking a detour to see this fortification, the view of Lake Trasimeno and its islands, and the agricultural plains between Terontola and Castiglione del Lago.
We continue our trek, going into the woods along a track that, at the border between Tuscany and Umbria, takes us north towards Colle dei Termini, at an elevation that constantly fluctuates between 400 and 500 metres. Here the view gradually opens up to show us Tuscany and the towns of Chianciano and Montepulciano. We walk amidst pines, holm oaks, isolated oaks, junipers, heather and arbutuses until we reach a point where several tracks intersect, taking the one that goes uphill to the left. When we reach the highest point on our route, we take a very scenic ridge trail that crosses areas of maquis.
When we come to a junction with a thicket of cypresses and firs, we head right on a track that becomes rocky and steep at certain points, descending towards Sanguineto amidst vegetation composed mainly of rockroses, Spanish broom, junipers, holm oaks and small oaks.
The total length of the itinerary is 11.260 km.
